KPM100 motion sensor (3-axis AHRS) with M12 connector — Kjaerulf Pedersen a/s
Three-axis motion sensor with roll, pitch and yaw over Modbus RTU RS485.

Application

The KPM100 is a three-axis motion sensor — an AHRS — that delivers roll, pitch and yaw as Modbus registers over RS485. It is also known as a digital inclinometer or dynamic inclinometer, and it reports attitude and heading relative to gravity and magnetic north.

Three sensing principles fused into one orientation

An accelerometer, a gyroscope and a magnetometer feed a DSP that fuses the signals into orientation relative to gravity and magnetic north — stable during acceleration, at constant speed, at low speed and when manoeuvring. Acceleration, angular velocity, magnetic field strength and internal temperature are read from the same registers as the angles.

Speaks Modbus with the systems already in place

Modbus RTU over RS485 connects the KPM100 directly to a PLC, SCADA system or supervision computer, with every value available in both integer and floating-point registers. Several sensors share one bus through the 1–247 address range, so multi-point monitoring runs on a single cable pair.

Alarms are evaluated in the sensor

Limits for angle and for rate of motion (°/s) are set per axis and monitored onboard, so the KPM100 raises alarms on its own — in a PLC loop or connected straight to a supervision computer.

From ships to structures

On board ship the KPM100 tracks motion for ballast levelling, stability and dynamic trim, and it is the sensor platform inside the Motion Detecting Unit. On structures and wind turbine towers it measures sway, tilt and foundation movement, and several sensors across a structure give a complete picture of its motion. In rail, it verifies that every switch movement is completed the same way, every time. Together with the KPV200 / KPV100 vibration sensor on the same Modbus bus, one cable pair carries both motion and vibration.

Configured from a PC, updated in the field

The KPM100 GUI handles setup, alarm limits, logging and magnetometer calibration, and new firmware loads through the bootloader over the same Modbus connection.
